The Building Blocks Have Been Laid

WHS Coach Humphreys - April 25, 2008 - As you enter the Waller Baseball Complex, you can’t help but notice the many positive changes in motion. Behind the efforts of a dedicated and hard working group of parents, coaching staff and community boosters, the baseball complex is now a breeding ground for developing players and enjoying good fundamental baseball in a beautiful park. With the addition of the covered and lighted batting tunnel area, the completion of the concession/press-box, additional windscreen lining the fences, backstop padding (if we had it earlier we would have one more win Ha! Ha!), and a manicured playing surface: Waller is gradually turning into a showcase complex.
Changes are also abundant as you attend any level of the Bulldog games. From the new look uniforms, to the bleachers filled with excited fans, to the level of play and results from each individual player and team. When the opponents leave Waller, they are leaving with losses or a newly formed respect for the Waller baseball program. The response from opposing coaches, players and fans has been positive and genuine, knowing that Waller has “come to play”.
The Bulldogs put together a very challenging non-district schedule to prepare for a rigorous 18-4A grind. While participating in three early season tournaments, they stood toe-to-toe with many of the states best 4-A programs. They also walked away undefeated from the Jersey Village tournament in which they played all 5-A teams. The tough early season grind paid off as the Bulldogs put a scare into district 18-4A by finishing the first round of district play with a 4-2 record and broke into the Greater Houston Area rankings at #15. With two games left in the season, the Bulldogs found themselves playing for a State Playoff appearance for the first time in a long time. Waller lost a heartbreaker 5-4 which would be the 11th time this season in which a varsity game was won or lost by one or two runs. That’s exciting baseball!
It is exciting times around the Waller baseball field. The sub-varsity teams have also enjoyed a great deal of much improved success as the JV and Sophomore teams combined for a 24-16 overall record. The building blocks have been laid by this years seniors and their families. It’s now up to the underclassman and future Bulldogs to continue to build on the new foundation of the program.

Many thanks to the coaching staff and administration and to this years seniors:

Jake Cimerhanzel, Seth Cooke, Myles Derrick, Brent Herzog, Darrell Hudson, Kyle Pringle and Cody Mikeska.

Go Bulldogs!!

WHS JV Bulldog Baseball wins
4-2 over Montgomery
WALLER ISD - March 14, Waller High School's JV Bulldog Baseball team pulled out a close victory against the Montgomery Bears. Behind
brilliant pitching by Zach Bellinger and timely hitting by Kody Merchant, Jesse Lain, Tyler Bain, Parker Edmonds, Chance Kammerer, and Bellinger, the Bulldogs fought through a two run deficit to take the 4-2 win.

Bellinger, who gave up only two runs in the first inning, pitched a complete game for the win.  He was aided by some solid defense played by
Brett Lednicky, Ryan Hall, Karter Ginn, Trevor Mathis, Corey Hightower, and Edmonds. All the Bulldogs contributed to the hard fought victory.
The Bulldogs stayed focused and battled to roll off two runs of their own in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth. Hats off to the JV Bulldogs who currently boast an 8-3 record overall and 1-1 in district after a tough loss to Brenham earlier in the week. Keep up the good work Bulldogs!

3/18/08
WHS Sophomore Baseball wins 3, loses 1
WALLER ISD - Waller High School's Sophomore Bulldog Baseball Coach Rodney Loewe had to keep his team chained to the porch due to bad
weather March 7. The long wait had the Bulldogs scratching for a fight on March with a double header against Dekaney. Right-hander Chad Arnold
shut the Lions out through four innings and surprising left-fielder Brandon Sandoval came in to close the game in the fifth. The Bulldogs went on to win the first game 22-0. In second game Coach Loewe put his confidence in sophomore right-hander Scotty McCloud who proved worthy by pitching four shutout innings. Sophomore Garret Holloway entered the game in the fifth and the Bulldogs went on to win 18-0. It was a tremendous effort by the offense in both games and Coach Loewe had the luxury of looking at some of his younger players who gave him a great effort including Kyle Schmidt, Paul Fritzsching, Wesley Glueck, and James Lenart. Outfielder Coach Eric Geigley said the team has a friendly dog fight between the bench players; he loves their hustle and effort, and looks forward to seeing which 'Dog emerges as a starter.

March  13, coming off two big wins, WHS' Sophomore Bulldog Baseball team prepared for their first district game against rival Brenham. Anxious to see how their team would fair in district play, Coach Loewe put it in the hands of his ace young hard throwing Trent Rape. After giving up five runs in the first inning, Rape settled down and pitched a decent game against a very aggressive Brenham offense. It was a learning process for Rape.

"Even with the strongest arm in the district, he must learn to keep the ball low in the strike zone so teams won't be able to touch him stated," Coach Geigley.

Rape is a fierce competitor and Coach Loewe was thrilled with the way he never gave up and was still chucking hard well into the sixth inning. The Bulldog's offense only generated four runs on three hits and three walks. Sophomore Dylan Froman is starting to emerge as a producer on offense with a walk, a double, and one run scored. Both Matthew Pierce and Josh Cimerhanzel contributed with singles and both scored a run. In the end the Brenham offense was too much and the 'Dogs were defeated 13-4.

After an ear full and some persuasive running exercises, Coach Loewe's sophomore team responded well with a big district win March 14 against the Montgomery Bears. Freshmen pitcher Cimerhanzel performed surgery on the mound allowing only one run and one hit slicing through
the Bears offensive lineup.

"The best thing about Josh is his control and the ability to keep the ball low, and in so doing, his defense gets behind him and made tremendous plays," Loewe said.

Coach Geigley had nothing but great things to say about the young freshmen pitcher. "He's a great size kid, with a great work ethic, and it pays off for him on the playing field. If he keeps working hard lookfor great things to come," Geigley said.

The offense came alive as well. Leading the charge was McCloud going 3-3 with a double and three runs scored. Pierce and Arnold got into the action each with a hit and each scoring two runs. Shortstop Rape added to the scoring with a monster double and one run scored. Froman kept his hitting streak going with a single and a run scored. Rounding out the scoring was left-fielder Sandoval who drew a walk, stole a base, and scored one run.

At the sophomore level many games can be won or lost depending on how well the catcher plays. Max McConnell had a great defensive game
behind the plate, and when he's on his game the Bulldogs are hard to beat. When the final out was made the Bulldogs were once again victorious by the score of 10-1 bringing the sophomore Bulldog baseball team's record to seven wins and two loses on the year.

Bulldog Varsity Goes Undefeated In
Jersey Village Tournament
WALLER ISD – The Bulldog varsity traveled down 290 to participate in the Jersey Village Classic and returned home undefeated after a great weekend. The Bulldogs have now been involved in 9 games this year in which the outcome of the game was decided by 2 runs or less and most of those being decided in the closing innings vs. some very tough competition. Two of this weekend’s games were just that.
First up was Sam Rayburn, who brought in an (8-1) record to face a hot Jake Cimerhanzel on the mound. Needing some last inning relief from Robert Loewe, they combined to hold Rayburn to only three hits and snuff out a last inning rally by nailing a runner at third on an attempted double steal to win the game 5-4. The Bulldogs collected 9 hits as  Jake Seaman went (3 for 4) including a Home Run while Brent Herzog and Robert Loewe each collected 2 hits for the cause.
The Jersey Village Falcons were next on the list as they were just coming off winning the Wharton Invitational tournament Championship. Once again it was a nail biter. The two teams battled back and forth for 9 innings in a 2-2 deadlock as Clayton Heise turned in an outstanding pitching performance as his low pitch count allowed him to stay in and record a “complete game” while giving up only 4 hits and zero earned runs. The Bulldogs continued to put runners all over the bases during the last three innings but could not come up with the big “RBI” hit. Four double plays turned in by Robert Loewe and Miller Pierce allowed the defense to turn back would be rallies. Waller collected 6 hits as Jake Cimerhanzel  Myles Derrick and Brent Herzog helped the cause. By virtue of the Bulldogs recording more total base runners, they advanced with the win for Heise and his excellent outing.
After their 9th two run or less game decision, the Bulldogs were due for an outbreak. The Westbury Rebels were thinking “Who Let The Dogs Out?” after the first two innings as Waller pounded the ball and went on to score 11 runs on 9 hits.  Robert Loewe continued to pound the ball as he got another two hit game.  Miller Pierce and Kyle Pringle each had a big two RBI hit, and Cody Mikeska cleared the bases on double and had four RBI’s in the game.  Cody also picked up the win after throwing three innings followed by sophomore Parker Edmonds and junior Robert Loewe closing it out for the win.
The Bulldogs will now begin District play this week after a VERY tough pre-district schedule has come to an end with a (5-8) record. The Bulldogs will take on Brenham on Tuesday at Waller and travel to Montgomery on Friday. Congratulations to all of the Waller Bulldog teams on a very good non-district showing including the J.V.’s (7-3) record and the Sophomore’s (6-1) record. Hope to see everyone out at the park supporting this years Bulldogs!

WHS Sophomore Baseball takes second in
Willis Tourney
WALLER ISD – Waller High School’s sophomore bulldog baseball team was eager to get back to business after being forced to sit out Feb. 21-23 due to bad weather. The Bulldogs entered the Willis tournament Feb. 28 with three solid pre-season victories under their belt which included a 14-1 walloping of DeKaney Feb. 18 and a come from behind 9-7 victory in El Campo Feb. 26.
The Bulldogs drew district rival Montgomery in the first game of the tournament Feb. 28. Coach Rodney Loewe gave freshmen hurler Chad Arnold the nod. Arnold pitched four solid innings and left the game with the score tied. Dylan Froman entered the game at pitcher with time expired and walked his first batter. This was the first real pressure the ‘Dogs have felt all year. Froman settled down and threw the next batter a first pitch strike on the corner. The bears coach, anxious to move the runner, gave the signal for hit and run. With the crack of the bat, a hard short up the middle, the runner was moving. Bulldog shortstop Trent Rape moved with aggression and fielded the hot hopper and tossed it to Scott McCloud who gloved it and threw the runner out at first. It was a beautiful 6-4-3 double play!! Froman went on to strike out next batter and game ended in a 6-6 tie. The tournament director used the official book to determine that the Bulldogs would move into the winner’s bracket by way of more men advancing to third base (4-3). The victory was a total team effort and in the end it was the ‘Dogs aggressive style of play that rewarded them with the victory.
Feb. 29 the Bulldogs faced tournament host, and another district rival, the Willis Wildcats. From the very first pitch freshman Josh Cimerhanzel took command of the game and pitched a complete seven inning shut out. The ‘Dogs won 10-0. Again, they were very aggressive on the bases and beat out many close plays that could have gone either way. Most of the offensive power came from the top of the order which included Matthew Pierce, Arnold, McCloud, Rape, and Cimerhanzel. The bottom of the order proved themselves with great at bats by Paul Fritzsching and Kyle Schmidt. Max McConnell did a great job leading the defense and was easily the best defensive catcher in the tournament. Shortstop Rape made an awesome diving catch in short center field in between two charging outfielders to kill a Wildcats rally. Coach Rodney Loewe and Eric Geigley looked forward to see how their team would fare against 5A powerhouse Tomball in the championship game.
March 1, the ride was over and the ‘Dogs took a walloping of their own by the hands of Tomball High School’s squad. There were moments of hope with clutch hits by Pierce and Brandon Sandoval as well as more unbelievable defensive play by shortstop Rape who threw a hustling Tomball runner out at the plate from deep left field. But in the end the ‘Dogs loaded the bus tails still wagging with second place honors and a prayer in their hearts that they get another chance to face the Tomball squad and prove themselves champions.

WHS JV Bulldog Baseball wins
Willis Tourney
WALLER ISD – Waller High School’s Junior Varsity (JV) Bulldog Baseball team won the Willis Tournament March 8 led by outstanding pitching from sophomore Zach Bellinger and junior Jesse Lain.
Rain on March 6, when the tournament was slated to begin, had the team had to relying on a coin flip that allowed them to move on in the winner’s bracket. March 7, the Bulldogs got down to business on the field with an 11-3 win over Willis to take them to the championship game. During the game, the Bulldogs put together an impressive showing with numerous hits and stolen bases by Jacob Wendt, Tyler Bain, Zach Bellinger, Brett Lednicky, Kody Merchant, Zach Salinas, and Corey Hightower. Hightower helped with a three run homerun. Stingy defense was provided by Karter Ginn, Ryan Hall, Trevor Mathis, and Austin Tilton. The Bulldogs kept the pressure on with at least one score in every inning.
WHS took on Magnolia High School in the championship game March 8 and the battle of the Bulldogs did not disappoint. Great pitching from both teams made it hard to put runs on the board. Bellinger pitched the complete game for WHS in what was likely his best pitching performance to date. Waller scraped a run across in the third inning and two innings later put three more on the scoreboard. Bain, Bellinger, Lednicky, Tilton, Hall, Mathis, and Chance Kammerer all helped put up seven runs for Waller. Defensively the team was helped by Wendt, Merchant, Lain, Ginn, and Hightower. Magnolia rallied in the last inning, but with two outs remaining, Wendt made a running catch in centerfield and threw to first to double the runner off and end the game. It was a great ending for a great game. Thanks for all the support for the WHS JV Bulldogs and go ‘Dogs!

Bulldogs Drop Heartbreaker to Montgomery 4-3

Kurt Hancock had another outstanding effort on the mound with only a loss to show for after Montgomery scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th to steal one away from the Bulldogs. Montgomery tied the score at 2 in the 6th innings on a bases loaded walk. The Bulldogs answered back in the top of the 7th when Zach Nichols singled moved to 2nd on a wild pitch and scored on a Clayton Heise two out single just out of the
shortstop's reach.  Leading 3-2 entering the 7th, Bobby Stone led off with a walk.  After failing to sacrifice the runner to 2nd, Eggleston lashed a 3-2 single to left field. The next batter laid down a sacrifice and appeared to run into the baseball out of the box.  No call was made and the bases were loaded.  A sacrifice fly to deep center tied the score at 3. The next batter was walked intentionally to set up a double play.  Hancock got the batter to hit a ground ball to 3rd but the play was not made ending the ballgame. Other hits on the evening belonged to
Jake Cimerhanzel and Robert Loewe.

The Bulldogs will travel to Livingston next Friday.

Nuti's Grand Slam Drops Bulldogs 9-5

Four to three leads in the 6th inning should be a good thing. Not against Brenham as for the 2nd time this year a homerun gave the Cubs a lead they would not let go.

The Bulldogs had a strong performance from Senior Garrett Heise who held the Cubs at bay for most of the evening.  The Bulldogs tied the score at 1 as catcher Kyle Pringle  sent a fastball over the left field fence for his first homerun of the season.  The Bulldogs took a 3-1 lead in the 3rd inning when Robert Loewe walked, went to 3rd on
Jake Cimerhanzel's single followed by a 2 run double by Kurt Hancock. The Bulldogs lead held up until the 5th innings when an umpire's mistake led to run number three. With the Cubs down 3-2 Heise enticed what appeared to be an inning ending double play, but the runner was called safe at first when neither umpire followed the path of the ball.  The very next pitch went to the back stop scoring the 3rd run.  The Bulldogs bounced back quickly in the bottom of the 5th when Loewe singled, moved to 2nd on an overthrow and scored on an error by the Cubs second baseman. After striking out the first batter of the 6th inning, Heise walked the next two hitters.  A ground ball to 1st loaded the bases as the Bulldogs unsuccessfully tried to get the lead runner at 2nd. Heise then struck out the next batter to force the showdown with Nuti. The 1st pitch was sent over the right field fence to give Brenham a 7-4 lead.  Brenham scored once more in the inning and finished up their 9 run, 7 hit attack, with a homerun in the 7th.  The Bulldogs scored once more in the 7th inning on a ground out by Jake Seaman plating Myles Derrick.

The Bulldogs travel to Montgomery to play the Bears on Tuesday.

Player of the Week

Senior Kurt Hancock was 3 for 6 on the week with a double and 2 rbi's.  He lost a 2-1decision Tuesday against Huntsville pitching 6 innings and allowing 2 runs on 3 hits. Kurt's overall average was raised to .367

4/4/07

Bulldogs Fall to Huntsville 2-1

Huntsville plated two runs in the 1st without the aid of a hit and made them hold up for the next 6 innings in route to another one run loss for the Bulldogs. A hit batter, a walk, and 3 stolen bases followed by a throwing error plated the 1st Hornet run.   The next came home on a sacrifice fly.  Hancock surrendered only 3 hits the rest of the way but the damage had already been done. The Bulldogs had 6 singles lead by pitcher Kurt Hancock who was 2 for 3.  Solo hits by Hunter Wynn, Jake Seaman,  Seth Cooke, and an RBI single in the 7th by Robert Loewe completed the offense for the Bulldogs.

Next up Brenham Thursday night at Waller 7:00
"Little League Appreciation Night"

Caney Creek Continues Bulldogs Woes 8-2

The Bulldogs defense continued it’s generosity allowing 7 unearned runs in the second and third innings on only 2 hits.  Offensively the Bulldogs didn’t fair much better remaining scoreless until the 6th inning when 2 runs scored on a bases loaded ground out by Cody Mikeska and a two out infield single by Zach Nichols.  Other hits belonged to Robert Loewe, Jake Cimerhanzel, Hunter Wynn, Kyle Pringle, Jake Seaman (double), and Cody Mikeska (double).  Senior Tom Lockler came in and threw very well in relief allowing a single run on 3 hits over the last 5 innings.    Next week has the Bulldogs Traveling to Huntsville on Tuesday, and hosting Brenham on Thursday.   Thursday is “Little League Night” where anyone wearing his little league uniform will be admitted free with prizes being given away between innings.

Player of the Week

Junior Jake Cimerhanzel had 3 hits in 4 at bats vs Willis including 2 doubles.  He had 1 single in 3 at bats vs Caney Creek to finish off a 4-7 week and raise his overall batting average to .400.

Waller Whips Willis; Waller 14 Willis 3
Austin Tilton went 2-for-4 with 2 doubles and two RBIs. Garrett Holloway got his first win of the year only giving up three runs on five hits. Willis took the lead 3-1 in the third inning on an RBI double. Waller came back and scored 13 runs in the fourth. Third baseman Glen Gilliam hit a triple that scored 2 runs. The win gave the Bulldogs (11-4, 2-3) a sweep of the series between the two teams in 18-4A.

Waller Wins Easily Again; Waller 20 Hempstead 5
The Waller Bulldogs traveled to Hempstead to play the Bobcats for a non-district game. The Dogs came out flat and fell behind 4-1 in the first. Freshman pitcher Jacob Wendt settled down and found his rhythm
after the first inning.  He finished the game strong only allowing 5 runs on 4 hits while striking out 6.  Dylan Froman went 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI's. Wendt, Tilton, Gilliam, and Kammerer all contributed with key hits that put the game away in the third. Waller improves to (11-4) overall and (2-3) in district 18-4A.

Bulldogs Continue Giving Ways

The Bulldogs had 14 hits, 4 walks, and 7 runs. It wasn't enough as the Wildkats from Willis scored 4 times in the bottom of the 7th to steal one from the Bulldogs. Trailing 2-1 entering the 5th inning the Bulldogs bats appeared to come to life scoring 4 runs and lead 5-3 heading to the 6th.  The bulldogs tacked on single runs in the top of the 6th and 7th but couldn't come up with the big blow to put the game away. Willis continued its pesky ways scoring one in the 6th and trailed by 3 entering their half of the 7th inning.  Garrett Heise who relieved starter Kurt Hancock in the 6th got the lead off hitter to ground out to 3rd baseman Cody Mikeska. The next batter singled and moved to second on a ball in the dirt. Heise appeared to have struck out the next batter but the ball was ruled to have hit the dirt and the throw to get the batter hit him in the back. The next batter doubled down the left field line to put the tying run on 2nd base with one out.  A ground ball to 3rd plated the 6th run and moved the runner over to 3rd with two outs. A ground ball to second base seemed to end the threat but the ball was bobbled and no play was made tying the score at 7. An errant pick off attempt moved the runner to 3rd base. Cody Mikeska came in for relief and wild pitched the runner home from 3rd completing the heart breaking loss for the Bulldogs.  "It seems like lately we're playing not to lose instead of playing to win."  "We are looking for our players to develop a killer instinct and the ability to put teams away when given the opportunity." Offensively the Bulldogs were lead by Jake Cimerhanzel 3-4 (2 doubles), Zach Nichols, Seth Cooke, Robert Loewe, Jake Seaman, and Hunter Wynn also collected 2 hits. The Bulldogs close out round one of District on Friday night against Caney Creek.

3/25/07

Bulldogs Tamed by Lions 5-1

The Bulldogs have seen enough of Livingston's pitcher Gibson over the last 2 season.  The crafty left-handed senior has owned the Bulldogs over the last 3 meetings allowing only 1 run in 21 innings.  The lone run came in the home fourth inning as Hunter Wynn and Jake Seaman led off the inning with back to back singles.  Gibson struck out the next hitter then gave up the 3rd and last hit of the evening to Cody Mikeska which loaded the bases.  Gibson then struck out the next hitter and was one strike away from escaping the jam but did not pause allowing the runner from 3rd to score on a balk.  He finished off the third batter of the inning via the strike out and sat down the next 9 out of 10 batter to continue his mastery of the Bulldogs.  The lions put together just enough offense to go along with four Bulldog miscues to plate 5 runs in the first 4 innings.  Senior Garrett Heise came in and did a nice job of keeping the Lions at bay surrendering one unearned run over the last four innings.  The loss completed a three game skid from what many predicted to be the top three teams in the district (Brenham, Montgomery, and Livingston).  The Bulldogs have a big week coming up with games against Willis (0-4) on Tuesday and surprising Caney Creek (3-1) on Friday.  Two wins would go a long way towards boosting the Bulldogs confidence as they position themselves to make a late season push during the second round of district.

Waller Sophomore and Junior Varstiy Teams sweep Livingston 20-0,  9-0

Freshman Miller Pierce pitched 2 shutout innings, and also went 3-for-4 with 4 RBI's at the plate as the Waller Bulldogs beat Livingston 20-0. Waller jumped to an early 7-0 lead by batting around in the first inning. They never looked back after that.
The Bulldogs improved their record to (9-3) overall and (1-2) in district play. The Bulldogs had 16 hits, including 7 for extra bases. Freshman pitcher/outfielder Jacob Wendt also had 2 doubles adding 3 RBI's. Garrett Holloway came in as the closer to seal the victory for the Bulldogs. Waller hopes to continue success as they play Willis on Monday @ 4:30.

Lose 5-4 on walk-off homerun.

Waller is still searching for the ability to put away good teams when the opportunity presents itself. The bulldogs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on singles by Robert Loewe and Hunter Wynn followed by a 3 run homerun over the centerfield fence by Jake Cimerhanzel. The bulldogs tacked on another one in the 3rd inning with a two out single over the 2nd baseman's head by Cody Mikeska. Starting pitcher Kurt Hancock was cruising along until a misplayed fly ball dropped for a double, followed by another outfield error plating the Cubs first run. Another Bulldog error followed by a 2-run Homerun by SS Nuti cut the lead to 1. The Cubs loaded the bases in the 6th inning with no one out but Hancock struck out the next two batters and appeared to have escaped the jam by enticing the next hitter to hit a ground ball to 2nd until another error allowed the runner to narrowly beat the feed at 2B. With the score tied at 4 Robert Loewe collected his 3rd hit of the evening and moved to 2nd on Hunter Wynn's walk. A pass ball put runners at 2nd and 3rd with one out but the Cubs pitchers struck out the 3 and 4 hole hitters to end the threat. The next batter sent a 2-1 fastball over the leftfield fence to send the Cubs to a 5-4 victory.
The Bulldogs look to rebound on Friday as they host the Livingston Lions.

Waller Wins District Opener

The Bulldogs came out confident and generated just enough offense to support another fine outing by Junior pitcher Cody Mikeska.  Cody went 7 strong innings giving up 6 hits and 2 runs while striking out 7 and walking 1 batter.  After falling behind one run early, Waller responded with 2 runs in the bottom of the 4th with rbi singles from Kurt Hancock and Garret Heise.  With 2 outs in the 5th innings Hunter Wynn walks, steals 2nd, moves the 3rd on a pass ball and scores on another pass ball.  The Bulldogs last run came on a fielding error with two outs that scored Jake Seaman who doubled earlier in the inning.  Big win to start off the season.  Hitting notables:  Cody Mikeska and Zach Nichols had two hits a piece to lead the Bulldogs 9 hit attack.
